# Create a design system

> Give Pretty your PowerPoint template and decks, or your website and brand files, and it builds a design system that every chat and deck in the workspace uses.

A **design system** tells Pretty how your decks look and read: your master and its layouts,
colours, fonts and logos, the elements you keep reusing (chevrons, number badges, tables) and the
rules your team writes by. Chats and new decks that use it come out on-brand without you repeating
any of it. You don't write it by hand: Pretty builds it from what you already have.

> [card] [Create a design system in Studio](https://editor.make-pretty.com/studio/new)
>
> Opens Studio in the web editor, ready for your files.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Design systems are shared with the whole workspace, so **Owners and Admins** create them. Members
> use them in every chat, and can try changes on their own with **Make your own copy**. See
> [Members and roles](https://docs.make-pretty.com/admin/members.md).

## What you need

Studio asks *"Do you have PowerPoint templates?"*

| | What to add |
| - | - |
| **I have PowerPoint templates** | Your master (`.pptx`), with a style guide if you have one, and two or three recent decks people were happy with, as PowerPoint or PDF. Font files (`.otf`, `.ttf`, `.woff` or a `.zip`) only if your brand uses a font Pretty doesn't have. |
| **Start without a template** | Your website, and anything that shows your look: a brand guide, a deck saved as PDF, your logo, screenshots. Pretty builds a master in your colours and fonts. You can also add designs you like, from anyone: Pretty takes their feel, not their colours or logo. |

You can add up to 20 files, each up to 200 MB.

> [!TIP]
>
> Pick decks that look the way you want new slides to look. A finished client deck teaches Pretty
> far more than a template full of placeholder text.

## Create it

**1. Open Studio**

Use the button above, or click **Studio** in the [web editor](https://editor.make-pretty.com)'s
left rail, then **New design system**.

**2. Add your files**

Answer *"Do you have PowerPoint templates?"* and add what the table above lists.

**3. Say what it's for**

Optional, but it helps. Type into *"Anything else Pretty should know…"*, or start from one of
the example briefs under the box: **Corporate look**, **Client brand** or **Sub-brand**.

**4. Create**

Click **Create design system**.

Pretty names the design system after the brand it finds. You can rename it later.

## While Pretty builds

A build takes up to 30 minutes. You can leave the page: you get *"… is ready"* when it's done.
Anything you write in the chat beside the build is applied once it's finished.

## Check what Pretty built

Open the design system in **Studio**. Its page shows **Colours**, **Typography**, **Masters and
layouts**, **Elements** and **References**. Fix what's off with **Edit with Pretty**, which opens a
chat beside the page. [Review and improve a design system](https://docs.make-pretty.com/design-systems/review.md) walks through
what to check.

## Use it

Choose **Make default** in the design system's menu, so new chats and decks start with it. People
can also pick it wherever they start work:

| Where | How |
| - | - |
| Web editor | **Design system for new chats**, in the composer on Home |
| PowerPoint add-in | **Design system for new chats** at the top of the menu |
| An existing chat (add-in) | **Design system for this chat** |

The choice applies to new chats only. Existing chats keep their design system.

## Troubleshooting

> [accordion] Text comes out in the wrong font
>
> Pretty can only use fonts it has. Open **Typography** in the design system and upload the
> missing family with **Upload font**, every weight you use. See [Brand fonts](https://docs.make-pretty.com/admin/brand-fonts.md).

> [accordion] The decks mix two brands
>
> A design system describes one brand. If your files mix two looks, for example an old and a new
> master, build one design system per brand, each from its own decks.

> [accordion] I started without a template and have one now
>
> Click **Improve with your PowerPoint template** on the design system's page. Pretty builds it
> again from your template, as a new design system beside the first.
